Why employers are paying attention to sports betting
Pew Research found 22% of U.S. adults bet on sports in the past year, including 31% of adults 18 to 29. A New York Federal Reserve staff report found missed card and loan payments rose more than 10% among people who started betting after legalization. Studies differ on how much, but the money stress follows people to work.
For employers with cleared staff, the stakes are higher. In June 2026, the Department of Energy denied a security clearance to someone with large unpaid debts tied to gambling. Reviewers count getting help early in a person's favor.
