You self-excluded from every sportsbook in your state. That took guts. Then an ad shows up for a prediction market where you can trade on the same games, and your self-exclusion does nothing to stop you. If that's happened to you, you're not alone, and your recovery didn't fail. You just found one more door to lock.
Why your self-exclusion doesn't cover Kalshi
Prediction markets like Kalshi are regulated by the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission, so states don't license them. That's why they can operate even in states without legal sports betting, and why state self-exclusion lists leave them out. Sports make up the large majority of their trading. NPR reported in October 2026 that sports were about 80% of Kalshi's volume.
That NPR story followed a Pennsylvania man who had self-excluded from DraftKings and FanDuel after filing for bankruptcy over sports betting debt. About two years later, an Instagram ad pulled him onto Kalshi, where he lost more than $25,000. He was on Pennsylvania's self-exclusion list the whole time.
How to close the Kalshi loophole
- Use SelfExclude.io. It's a shared self-exclusion service for prediction markets, run by IC360. It's live on Kalshi and Novig, with Polymarket, Robinhood and others listed as coming soon. You choose 1, 3 or 6 months or 1 year, verify your ID, and the block usually starts within 24 hours. You can make it longer, but you can't make it shorter.
- Exclude on each app directly. Kalshi has its own self-exclusion and trading breaks. Polymarket added self-exclusion, including a permanent option, in October 2026. See the guides for Kalshi, Polymarket and Novig.
- Watch for prediction markets inside apps you already use. Robinhood offers sports contracts through Kalshi. FanDuel, DraftKings, Fanatics and Underdog have added prediction products too, sometimes in states where they don't run a sportsbook. Close or exclude on each one.
- Close your positions first. Kalshi says you can't sell open positions during a break or exclusion, so settle up before you lock yourself out.
- Block the apps. Use a blocker and your phone's content restrictions. This guide walks you through it. We couldn't confirm yet whether popular gambling blockers cover prediction markets, so ask the blocker's support, and block the app store listings yourself.
- Cut off the ads. Hide or report prediction market ads on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
To your brain, prediction markets are gambling
In September 2026, the National Council on Problem Gambling called prediction markets "functionally gambling" and urged self-exclusion and other protections. Some of Kalshi's markets settle in 15 minutes. Whatever the legal label says, a fast-settling contract on a game hits your brain the same way a bet does.
Where the law on Kalshi stands
States are fighting this in court. New Jersey asked the U.S. Supreme Court in September 2026 to hear its case against Kalshi after losing in a federal appeals court, while Nevada won in a different appeals court. Until that's settled, protecting yourself is on you.

FAQ
Does state self-exclusion cover Kalshi?
It doesn't. Kalshi is federally regulated, so state self-exclusion lists can't reach it. Use Kalshi's own self-exclusion and SelfExclude.io.
What is SelfExclude.io?
A shared self-exclusion service for prediction markets, run by IC360. It's live on Kalshi and Novig, with more platforms listed as coming soon.
Can I get my money back from Kalshi if I was self-excluded from sportsbooks?
State sportsbook self-exclusion doesn't apply to Kalshi, so there's no general refund process. If you believe a platform broke its own rules, talk to a lawyer.
Is betting on Kalshi gambling?
Legally it's treated as trading event contracts. The National Council on Problem Gambling calls prediction markets functionally gambling. If you have a betting problem, the risk to you is the same.
