Your First 24 Hours After Your Last Bet

A step-by-step plan for tonight and tomorrow.

The app is still open. Maybe the bet lost, maybe it won and you still feel sick. Either way, something in you just said "that's the last one," and you meant it.

The next 24 hours matter more than any others, but you don't have to fix your whole life tonight. Tonight is about two things: making the next bet as hard as possible to place, and getting through one day.

Hour 0 to 1: Put a wall between you and the next bet

  • Delete every betting app on your phone, tablet and computer, along with saved logins and bookmarks.
  • Install a gambling blocker, like Gamban, on every device. If you can, let someone else set the password.
  • Turn on your phone's built-in limits: Screen Time content restrictions on iPhone, or Digital Wellbeing and Play Store restrictions on Android.
  • Close your sportsbook accounts or self-exclude. If you can't do that tonight, set every deposit limit to $0.

Hour 1 to 3: Make your money harder to reach

  • Remove saved cards, bank accounts and PayPal from every betting site.
  • Ask your bank or card issuer about a gambling transaction block. Many of them offer one.
  • Don't try to win it back. The money is gone. Chasing it only digs the hole deeper. If tonight's loss was a big one, read what to do tonight and tomorrow after losing a lot.
  • No loans or cash advances for the next 24 hours.

Hour 3 to 12: Don't carry it alone tonight

  • Tell one person you trust. You can say: "I've been betting more than I've admitted, and I'm trying to stop. I just need someone to know."
  • If there's nobody yet, call or text 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738). It's free and confidential.
  • Plan your night. Skip the games, charge your phone outside your bedroom, and pick two things to do instead.
  • Ride out the urges. They rise, peak and fade if you don't act on them. The Ride the Urge tool walks you through one.

Hour 12 to 24: Set up tomorrow

  • Write down what led to your last bet: the time, the game, how you felt. That's your first trigger to plan around.
  • Find one meeting. Gamblers Anonymous and SMART Recovery both meet online.
  • Set your clean date in the Unbettable tools. Today counts as Day 1.
  • Eat, drink water and sleep. Tired, hungry and alone is when urges hit hardest.

What not to do after your last bet

  • Don't chase. The next bet won't fix this one.
  • Don't open new accounts or borrow someone else's.
  • Don't make big money decisions tonight. You'll think more clearly tomorrow.
  • Don't beat yourself up. Shame is one of the biggest triggers there is. You can take this seriously without hating yourself.

If you slip

A slip doesn't erase what you've learned. Go back to the first step and start again. Many people who quit for good needed more than one try.

FAQ

How do I get through an urge to bet tonight?

Urges rise, peak and fade if you don't act on them. Put distance between you and your phone, call or text someone, and use the Ride the Urge tool to wait it out.

Should I close my sportsbook accounts or self-exclude?

Both, if you can. Closing an account is a start, but self-exclusion is harder to undo. See how to self-exclude from sports betting.

What if I already bet again?
